| Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease most commonly seen
as silvery flakes (plaques) and red lesions on the elbows, knees, and scalp. It can take many other forms, including
"guttate" which looks like droplets, "pustular" that occurs mostly on the palms and soles, or "inverse" psoriasis
that affects skin folds like the armpits and groin. It can
also attack the nails and joints. Psoriatic arthritis is
a disabling disease.
About 2% of the population has this
noncontagious disease, but an accurate diagnosis to rule
out other conditions should only be done by a specialist in
dermatology. There is no cure for psoriasis, but research
continues into the many factors of this genetic autoimmune disease. |
