Practices and Principles : |
| Literally meaning "bone pathology," osteopathy is a much more sophisticated discipline than its name might imply. An osteopathic structural examination starts with careful palpation of asymmetries in the bony structures but this is by no means the limit of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available to osteopaths.
Through study of the interplay between function and structure in each individual patient's interrelated organ systems, a well-trained osteopath seeks to uncover the cause of illness in order to make best use of the body's potential ability to reach improved health.
In the United States, osteopathic physicians perform all accepted treatments of pharmacotherapy and surgery. They have also received extra training in medical school to add a third modality, called osteopathic manipulative medicine, to their patients' health regimen. Currently this modality is undergoing double-blind studies that appear to establish it as a useful and cost-effective adjunct to other health interventions. |
