Islamic challenges from Turks and Afghans gained in the first half of the second millennium A.D. Britain established an outpost in 1619 and by 1850 had made India a colony. Resistance led by Mohandis Gandhi beginning in 1920 led to the establishment of India as an independent republic in 1950. The country is very densely populated and struggles with persistent poverty.
The country is also known as BhÄ?rata in Sanskrit and some modern languages, and as BhÄ?rat in Hindi. It is sometimes also called HindustÄ?n. |
