| Progressive Black Men Inc. was founded in 1989 at Florida State University when a group of brothers decided to form an innovative organization for the purpose of obliterating the stereotypical views of black males portrayed in the media, in the entertainment circuit, and in the education arena. Members' defining characteristics of professionalism, punctuality, proficiency, and intellectuality reflect the true state of excellence that can be achieved as a nation.
The organization is more inclusive than a fraternity and more sophisticated than a club and invites incoming, returning, transferring, and graduate students to join.
Goals include, but are not limited to:
* The eradication of connotations that African American men are criminal, pimps, thugs, hustlers, players, and uncivilized;
* Increasing our academic standing: Aspiring entertainers, writers, teachers, politicians, engineers, medical and law students fill our ranks. Each with an innate desire to excel and share their techniques for success with other members;
* Assisting the local community: Progressive Black Men are among the most active student organizations on campus. Some of our current activities include: volunteering at Mims and Riley Elementary School, sponsoring Springfield Boys & Girls Club summer camp, Voter Registration Drives, mentoring for the Florida State University Minority Activity Program, and the Florida Department of Corrections;
* Increasing our knowledge of Black America: Understanding that knowledge leads to the ability to act accordingly, we strive to increase our awareness of current political and social events. There is no group more American than African Americans are;
* Unity among members and the university common: Inclusive of all fraternities and sororities, clubs, honor societies, and organizations at Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and Tallahassee Community College. |
